Alice in Borderland
Typography, Motion Graphics
Alice in Borderland is a Japanese sci-fi thriller TV series based off the manga of the same name. The story follows a young group of friends who get transported into a deserted Tokyo and soon discover that they must play deadly games, represented by card suites, to survive.
This project re-imagines the TV show’s current wordmark and title sequence into one that better reflects the dark, violent, and mystical tone of the show, as well as adding references to the important themes of the show.
Process
The process of this project began with the word mark. First a moodboard was created to narrow done the tone of the show. Then multiple sketches exploring concept directions were made and typefaces to use were researched. Vintokeys was the chosen typeface because of its sharp and condensed stylization, fitting with the dark and violent themes of Alice in Borderland.
The word mark was then developed over a series of iterations and specific concepts were implemented into the design. The I’s are tapered to look like hourglasses, representing the distortion of time in the Borderlands, the crossbars of the A are sharp, representing the lasers in the show, and in the negative space between the N’s, a knife is formed.
After the word mark was developed, concepts for the title sequence were explored through sketches, music exploration, and storyboarding before being animated in After Effects. The card suites that represent each game became the key symbols the title sequence was based upon.
Final Result
The final result of the Alice in Borderland project is a word mark and title sequence more fitting of the show.
