Fauna Fables
Illustration, Editorial Design
Fauna Fables is a short collection of classic fables from Greek storyteller, Aesop. This collection brings together stories based on the principles of kindness and fair treatment, serving as a reminder to slow down and be kind.
As people get older a combination of stress, moral disengagement, biases, and societal pressures can get in the way, resulting in behaviours that don’t reflect the lessons in kindness and fairness learned in childhood.
This is why now, more than ever, it is important that people are reminded of Aesop’s lessons in order to create a kinder world; a feat in which this book hopes to accomplish.
Fauna Fables features five different stories, each with its own illustration, flourishes, and moral statement at the end.
Process
The process of this book began with a long list of potential stories to use which were eventually whittled down to The Lion and the Mouse, The Wolf and the Lamb, The Fox and the Stork, The Sick Stag, and The Frog and the Mouse.
Afterwards, thumbnail sketches, storyboards, and a moodboard were created, followed by roughs, final illustrations, and layout design. Throughout this project, feedback was a critical part of the design process.
Each illustration was drawn traditionally with fine liner markers on paper, then brought into photoshop to be coloured in a style inspired by water colour and marker illustrations.
Final Result
The final result of Fauna Fables is a concise and organic illustrative book, that serves as a reminder of the important moral lessons from childhood.
